Environmental Stewardship

Three Mile Island Unit 1 is an environmental leader in the utility industry. We fully recognize our responsibility to be environmental stewards in Dauphin County and the operation of TMI Unit 1 provides a clean environment for those living in the area.

TMI Unit 1 uses an environmental management system to achieve environmental excellence. The system is certified under the strict criteria of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The certification, ISO 14001:2004, is the internationally recognized benchmark for environmental management systems. It requires a commitment to compliance with legal and other requirements, to prevent pollution and to ensure continuous improvement in those areas.

Three Mile Island also has an environmental staff that closely monitors the operations at TMI Unit 1 to ensure it is following the corporation’s clean environmental policy. It is Exelon’s commitment to constantly improve its environmental performance and to promote a corporate culture where full compliance with environmental regulations is the minimum level of acceptable performance.

The region’s air quality is also improved because nuclear energy plants emit no air emissions during their operations. A replacement power plant, similar in size to TMI Unit 1, using coal, would emit 271 metric tons of carbon dioxide into the air.

TMI Unit 1 also carefully monitors the air, water, soil and food products around the plant. Through careful analysis, it is determined that the operation of TMI Unit 1 has no adverse radiological impact on the environment.
