Plant Upgrades
Three Mile Island Unit 1 has been continually upgraded and equipment modernized to enhance safety, security and efficiency. AmerGen has invested more than $100 million into TMI since it purchased the plant in 1999. Highlights of recent equipment upgrades to ensure continued safe operations and to ensure essential electricity is supplied to the region, include:
- Turbine rotor replacements
- Reactor vessel head replacement
- Main transformer replacement
- Auxiliary transformer replacement
AmerGen will invest hundreds of millions of dollars more into the plant over the next 15 years in equipment and facility upgrades. The largest project is the $280 million replacement of TMI Unit 1’s two steam generators. Examples of future plant improvements include:
