Security
Three Mile Island is among the most secure industrial facilities in the world. Physical security of the plant is one of the four cornerstones of the regulatory process, and TMI Unit 1 complies with all requirements of plant security measures mandated by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC). TMI Unit 1 has spent more than $17 million in security upgrades in compliance with NRC’s enhancement orders to defend the station against potential terrorist attacks. Three Mile Island continually evaluates and upgrades their security plans beyond current requirements to ensure the best security force is providing the best protection.
U.S. nuclear plants are the most secure industrial facilities in the nation. Security measures have been significantly strengthened in response to enhancement orders by NRC in February 2002 and April 2003. The best security force is using the best equipment to defend the plant against any threat.
The paramilitary forces guarding the plant are among the best-trained private security forces in the nation. Two distinct outcomes of the security enhancements are the increase in the size of Three Mile Island’s security force and enhanced training programs. TMI’s security forces participate in force-on-force drills to prepare them to respond to various intrusion scenarios and demonstrate coordination among state and local law enforcement agencies.
Three Mile Island coordinates with local, regional and Federal authoritites, including the Dept. of Homeland Security and intelligence agencies, regarding threat assessments and specific actions industry security forces can take in the event of a credible threat against a commercial nuclear facility.
Also, Three Mile Island, like other nuclear plants located in the United States, are built specifically to withstand impacts from earthquakes, floods, hurricanes, aircraft and terrorist assaults.
